Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I start?
If you have an injury or a prescription from your doctor for physical therapy, contact us to set up your first physical therapy appointment and find out about insurance coverage. If you know you want to start your Pilates workouts, either schedule your first mat class online or contact us to schedule a private session (required before starting the regular equipment classes). You can also join our free intro to Pilates classes that we offer twice a month! See our schedule page for more details.

How does Pilates fit in with my current workout program, and how often should I do it?
Pilates fits in great with all fitness programs. You will often find that the core stabilization and abdominal exercises in Pilates will improve your performance in your chosen sport or activity. Most people experience the highest benefit when doing Pilates two to three times a week.

What if I have an injury or health issue?
Pilates was actually first developed as a rehabilitation and physical therapy tool. It is ideal for injury recovery in that you will strengthen muscles while protecting your body and relearning proper movement patterns. Our unique combination of licensed physical therapists and Pilates instructors will ensure you progress through the exercises while avoiding re-injury.

What is physical therapy and do I need it?
Physical Therapy is a medical service covered by insurance that helps you recover from acute or chronic injuries. It usually will occur after a specific injury or surgical procedure. You and your doctor will determine if you are an appropriate candidate for physical therapy. If so, you will receive a prescription from your physician and you can call us to schedule an appointment. If you aren't sure if physical therapy is right for you or don't have a doctor to see, contact us and we can help.

What if I don't have any experience with strength training or being in an exercise class?
Pilates is perfect for you! Our specialized Pilates equipment, one-on-one Pilates instruction and small Pilates class sizes will make you feel comfortable trying something new, yet you will never feel self-conscious. You will be surprised by your own ability.

Can I lose weight with Pilates?
Yes! By using resistance and toning exercises and increasing your heart rate, Pilates can contribute to weight and fat loss and muscle development. At Harmony Pilates & Physical Therapy we believe in a three-tiered system for ultimate health - exercise, eating well and proper supplementation. We will teach all three with our Healthy for Life Program so that you will see permanent weight loss and health results!

What should I bring and/or wear?Bring water to stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothes to move in (for women suggested exercise pants or short, sports bra and t-shirt/tank - men, suggested shorts and a t-shirt). If you are attending a mat class, feel free to bring your own mat, but we also provide them. No need for tennis shoes in Pilates! We do it barefoot :). For physical therapy, bring your prescription, driver's license and insurance card, and comfortable clothes that allow us to get to the injured area.

Should I be taking a vitamin or supplement?
Yes! Due to depleted minerals in the soil and toxins in the environment, we can no longer get all the vitamins and nutrients we need from the foods we eat. The American Medical Association says – and most doctors now agree - that every person should be taking a multi-vitamin. You can purchase the highest quality, natural, pharmaceutical grade supplements at the studio.

Am I eating the right things to get the most out of my workouts and help prevent disease?
What you put in your body is just as important as the exercise you get. The foods you chose make a huge impact on your energy, inflammatory levels, stress, immune system and mood. We can meet with you individually to assess your diet and needs, and educate you on how and what to eat for permanent lifestyle changes.

Is Pilates mostly for women?
No! Men gain as much, if not more, benefit from beginning a Pilates program. They will gain balance, flexibility and strength in muscles that don't get trained or used in the gym or with traditional sports. Pilates will aide in recovery from back injuries and improve performance in recreational activities. No matter how much time you spend in the gym, Pilates will challenge you and add to your overall strength.

How does Pilates compare to Yoga?
Pilates and yoga are often compared, but are really quite different. With most yoga classes static poses are held for longer periods of time, while Pilates is based on movement with strengthening. Pilates and yoga are very complimentary and work great when both are done as part of a complete fitness regimen.
